Alghero
The tour starts in the year round lively Catalan village of Alghero, where a room has been booked in the charming agriturismo Villa Barbarina; an intimate and child-friendly accommodation with pool. Amidst the olive trees on the spacious lawn the kids can run and play to their heart’s content.
Alghero is the perfect base for a journey of discovery through the north-west of Sardinia. Wander around the beautiful city centre, through the narrow alleys and lively piazzas to the bastions and admire the view across the harbour and the boulevard. If the kids don’t feel like a long walk, board the electrical train in the harbour or book a carriage to tour Alghero’s highlights.
A must see near Alghero is Neptune’s Grotto (“Grotte di Nettuno”), a stalactite cave on the tip of the peninsula of Capo Caccia whose entrance lies only around a metre above the sea level. The 204-metre-high cliffs and caves are therefore accessible via a boat trip of approximately 45 minutes from the port of Alghero. The trip including a guided tour will take approximately 3 hours. Please note that boat trips aren’t available if the waves are too high. Alternatively, when travelling with older children who are fond of walking, after a scenic route by car, you can descend the 654-step stairway cut into the cliff called “escala del cabirol” (goat’s steps) to visit the grotto.
While staying in Alghero the kids will love a visit to the Adventure Park Le Ragnatele. In this playground situated in a pine forest they can move through a web build in between the trees, like spiders. The adventure park is is opened during the summer season. In front of the Le Ragnatele the younger kids can enjoy a boat trip. We recommend combining a trip to Le Ragnatele with an afternoon at Le Bombarde; a lovely and child-friendly sandy beach at just 50 metres from the adventure park. Parasols and lounge chairs are available for rent at the various beach bars.
Ca. 7000 remains of Nuragic fortresses and defence towers dot the Sardinian landscape. The nuraghe are the most important megalithic artefacts found only in Sardinia. Just outside of Alghero you can visit Palmavera, one of the most famous nuraghes, together with a tour guide.
We recommend renting a boat in the harbour of Alghero to explore the rugged coastline or booking our excursion with the sailing boat Andrea Jensen; the perfect way to spend a day on the water! In the morning the sailing boat, dating back to 1939, leaves the harbour of Alghero for a unique trip. You’ll sail along the coastline to the national park, where to boat stops in a secluded bay. Here you can snorkel to your heart’s content and explore the underwater world. Accompanied by the stunning sunset, which bathes to city in a beautiful orange light, you’ll sail back to Alghero’s harbour. Should you be interested in this excursion, please don’t hesitate to ask us about the possibilities!

Cala Gonone
After breakfast the journey continues to the east coast, where you’ll be staying in the Bay of Orosei in the Nuraghe Arvu Resort; a beautiful family hotel with pool located on an estate of approximately 10.000 square meters near the Monte Bardia mountain and the clear blue sea.
The nearby village of Cala Gonone has a lively city centre filled with restaurants and boutiques. The beach, that consists of both sand and shingles and calm waters, is very child-friendly. There are several beach bars and restaurants. Good to know: there’s plenty of parking space.
Via the boulevard you’ll reach Cala Gonone’s harbour, where boats depart daily to the hidden Bue Marino caves, which can only be reached by sea. They are named after the Mediterranean monk seals which used to inhabit them. A trip to the Bue Marino caves can easily be combined with a trip to the unique bay of Cala Luna. Our tip: since many of the stunning bays in the area can only be reached by boot, we recommend renting one and enjoy a journey of discovery along the beautiful coast yourself!
Alternatively, you can book a “mini cruise” along the bay of Orosei. This excursion will depart from Cala Gonone. An experienced captain will sail you to the impressive cliffs, caves and fjords on a 7 metre long rubber boat. You can take a refreshing dive with the kids in the crystal clear waters along the way. Don’t forget to bring your snorkel gear!
Looking for an exhilarating day trip? The area near Cala Gonone is perfectly suited for spectacular hiking trips. We highly recommend visiting Europe’s largest gorge, the Gola di Gorropu, near the Nuragic village of Tiscali.
Set in between the olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation, overlooking the picturesque bay of Cala Gonone, the Sea Aquarium is a fun way to let your kids discover the secrets of the Mediterranean Sea. Here they can learn all about Sardinia’s tropical fish, carefully touch stingrays and sea urchins and admire the Piranha fish in the tanks!

Baja Sardinia
You’ll spend the last few days of the tour near the lively village of Baja Sardinia, ca. 27 kilometres north of Olbia. A room has been booked for 3 nights in Hotel Airone, a child-friendly hotel with pool and playground in a strategic location near the beach and various sights. During the high season there’s a shuttle service from the hotel to the beach of Ea Bianca. There are numerous beautiful bays in the area as well.
Following the coastal road via Baja Sardinia, after 8 kilometres you’ll reach the worldly town of Porto Cervo. Created by Prince Karim Aga Khan IV in the 60s and 70s, Porto Cervo is the main centre of the renowned Costa Smeralda. The Sardinian seaside resort is popular among the international and Italian jet set. In the small marina you can find a parade of luxurious yachts. The elite resides in one of the luxurious resorts, villas or hotels or visits the boutiques near the central square. Near Porto Cervo you’ll find many beautiful and child-friendly beaches, such as Capriccioli and Spiaggia del Principe.
A must see in the area is the archipelago of La Maddalena. It consists of more than 60 islands, of which La Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli are the biggest. From these islands only the main island La Maddalena is inhabited. Many tourists visit the archipelago by boat to enjoy the beautiful rock formations, nature, sea, bays and beaches. A ferry can bring you from Palau, known for the Bear Rock, to La Maddalena in a mere 20 minutes. With a bit of luck you can spot dolphins on the way.
Should you prefer to explore this beautiful national park during an organised excursion, don’t hesitate to ask us to book you a seat on the Lady Luna. This fantastic day trip, suited for kids as well, will bring you to various highlights and to the breath-taking beaches of Budelli and La Maddalena. There’s plenty of time to swim and explore the underwater world along the way.
A visit to the Water Park Aquadream in Baja Sardinia might be the perfect way to conclude your holiday. The park has many different slides for both young and old alike. You can relax in one of the picnic zones, gardens, chairs and lounge chairs after the exhilarating adrenaline rush. The fast-food restaurant serves pizzas, snacks and ice cream. Aquadream is opened from the end of June until September, from 10.30h – ca. 18.00h.
