The Costa Smeralda, or the Emerald Coast, is one of the most renowned (beach) holiday destinations in Sardinia. Up until the 60s, the area had beautiful natural landscapes yet no infrastructure. After a holiday in Sardinia, prince Karim Aga Khan III decided to stimulate the development of the area together with the architects Busiri-Vici and Vieti. In a short period of time they succeeded in transforming an uninhabited stretch of land into the most famous and fashionable coastline in Sardinia, centered around Porto Cervo. Other beautiful beaches such as Brandinchi, which is also called Tahiti, are found on the Capo Coda Cavallo peninsula.
