The mining town of Mussolini, unique beaches and plenty of archeology
Carbonia is a former mining town and not exactly a classic holiday destination on the island. The name comes from the Italian word "Carbone" which means "coal". This designation is not surprising when you consider that this city was Mussolini’s mining city. It was founded in 1937 - when the Fascist leader ordered the modernization of the coal mine Grande Miniera di Serbariu ". To accommodate the many workers, the city of Carbonia was built around the mine because those who worked in the mines received free accommodation, ensured that the city soon belonged to one of the three largest cities in Sardinia. In the years after the Second World War, the city had about 60,000 inhabitants, most of whom were active in the mining industry. - when the first mines were closed - half of the population left quickly.
Since 2016, Carbonia has been the provincial capital of the newly established "Provincia di Sud Sardegna". From the city you can reach the sandy beach of Porto Pino in 20 minutes, which is known for its unique dune landscape and fine white, almost dazzling sand. The coastal route along abandoned mines and old towers is also beautiful. For a beautiful sunset you are in the right place on the beach of Fontanamare. With a view of the rocky island of Pan di Zucchero it is really fantastic to watch the sun sink into the sea.
Archaeological traces can also be found in the southwest of Sardinia. In the northwestern town of Monte Sirai you can see a carrot Phoenician city with necropolis and Tophets, along with a nuraghe and several giant tombs (Domus de Janas). Near the sleepy hamlet of Villaperuccio is the lesser known necropolis of Montessu, with over forty tombs carved into the trachyte rock. Be sure to visit the museum village of Tratalias, where more than 40 medieval houses, a Spanish estate and a Romanesque cathedral have been preserved.

Lu Hotel Carbonia
Carbonia
In south-west Sardinia Carbonia together with Iglesias forms the capital of the province of Carbonia-Iglesias. Founded in the 30s during the fascist period, Carbonia was built in record time in order to provide housing for the workforce of the nearby mines. Established on 5 November 1937, the city was officially opened on 18 december 1938. The city was very important because of its strategic location in between the coal mines in the Sulcis area, which were one of the main sources of Italy's supply of energy at that time. After World War II the need for coal diminished and having lost their jobs many inhabitants moved out. After the closure of the mines in the 70s the town's economy was converted on the metallurgical industry.
